My style of teaching is basic, simple and grounded. I focus on bringing the attention into the body, breathing and moving the feet. Whilst encouraging each person to explore different ways of moving, I remind them to include all their body parts. This is the bones of the work and is returned to again and again. I use humour and a wide variety of music to help bring attention back to the self and to keep awareness within the body. Using the dance as a catalyst I often ask people to write, or draw or make theatre of what is stirred by the movement. After being asked to pay attention to what is going on inside themselves, their bodies, heads and hearts, I ask participants to give form to what they observe there. This is often shared with others. Making art may be with varied media, but particularly collage – which is available to everyone. All necessary materials are provided, and the work is done without judgement or criticism. People are often amazed at the quality of honesty, insight and beauty that comes out of these exercises. The poetry can be stirring or humorous; the theatre can be inspiring or funny. It is always unpredictable and spontaneous! |
